These lanterns are thin hand built porcelain (that transmits light) and I have rolled rice into the clay (which burns out in the kilns resulting in the thinner areas that appear like amoebae in a petri dish. You may recall from biology class that the reproductive method of cell division is termed "mitosis".
Check out the other stuff I'm doing. This functional tableware line is made of high-fire stoneware, fired in a gas kiln in reduction, using Shino glaze and various other glazes.

I love the rice texture burn out effect in the laterns... looking forward to seeing them on display at the show. Beautiful work!
